Article by Massage Envy Rocky Point

Spas have been around since ancient times, giving relief and relaxation to humanity. There are various types of spas. Massage spas offer various types of therapeutic massage such as reflexology massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy as well as some beauty treatments such as facials. You can avail of the services of such a massage spa at Rocky Point NY if you are from Suffolk County, Rocky Point, Manorville, Miller Place, Mount Sinai, Port Jefferson, Ridge, Yapank, Shoreham, Weeding River, Riverhead, Setauket, East Setauket, Port Jefferson Station, Coram, Seldon, Farmingville, Brookhaven, Middle Island, Medford or Sound Beach.

According to the International Spa Association (ISPA), the spa industry as it is known around the world today has ten segments, namely: the waters; food, diet and nutrition; exercise and fitness; bodywork and massage; mind, body and spirit connection; beauty and skin care; time, rhythm and cycles balancing; ecology and climatology; culture; and management and operations. A modern spa often has more than one of these ten segments.

The earliest spas in history, however, focused on the waters. Various ancient cultures around the world - including the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Mesopotamians and Minoans - considered social bathing as a means of relieving pain and as a treatment for many diseases.

The early Greeks had hot baths called laconica. Based on that, the Romans developed their own bath called balneum and the more luxurious Roman hot bath called thermae. The thermae grew to be so large as to be able to accommodate as much as 6,000 people at a time. They eventually became complexes with different types of baths, areas for sports and dining areas. The various baths had various degrees of heat. The largest and the most extravagant bath was called the tepidarium. People stayed there for an hour or more while being massaged with oils. These people then proceeded to individual bath booths called the caldarium, where they had a choice of hot or cold water. They then went on to the hottest bath, called the laconicum. They underwent more vigorous massage there. A metal implement called the strigil was used to scrape away dead skin cells. Afterwards, the bathers had a final immersion in the cold waters of the frigidarium.

In other parts of the world, such as in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and England, spas were built around natural hot springs and natural mineral springs that have been found to have restorative effects on people. These spas were developed during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Various types of water based restorative treatments were eventually developed, including thalassotherapy which harnesses the benefits of sea water. The services of spas have since then grown to include many other therapies, too. Many types of bodywork therapies and massage therapies have been incorporated, such as reflexology, acupuncture, reiki, Japanese Shiatsu and Thai massage. Facials, natural scrubs and body wraps have been added to spa menus. Even workshops in natural health, nutrition, meditation, yoga, Tai Chi and physical fitness have become part of many spas' offerings.

Ironically, many spas still mirror the experience of the ancient Roman thermae. Treatments begin with a cleansing and purifying shower. The body is then heated through various means. The client has a choice of using the heated Jacuzzi, the steam room or the sauna. Bodywork or massage then follows. Alternatively, this may be replaced with a body wrap and a body scrub. Finally, the client rests, relaxed and refreshed.

The Massage Envy massage spa provides reflexology massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy, along with massage gift cards in Rocky Point NY. It is one of the best and oldest ways to relax.
