How to Relax During Pregnancy

Article by L J McKeever

Relaxing during pregnancy can often feel like an up-hill battle. Sleeping is difficult, your hormones are surging, you have to carry extra weight and you have a busy pregnancy mind. Here is how to relax during pregnancy:

Try pregnancy aromatherapy:

Pregnancy aromatherapy is safe for use after the first trimester and is a great way to achieve pregnancy relaxation. If you are feeling stressed, try adding a couple of drops of ylang-ylang to your bath. To battle pregnancy insomnia, put some lavender oil on your pillow and if your hormones are leaving you feeling down, try an uplifting citrus scent to boost your mood.

Listen to relaxing music:

Listen to a relaxing mp3 download of ocean or thunderstorm sounds. Such sounds are known to soothe even the most fractious of pregnancy minds. You may also want to use these sounds to rock yourself in to a deep sleep.

Write down your worries:

It is quite common to worry during your pregnancy. Maintaining great over all health, planning your birth and preparing yourself for your new baby can leave you feeling stressed. Writing down what is worrying you will help to clear your mind and free you of unnecessary negative thoughts. This technique is known to be particularly useful for helping pregnant women sleep. Try it just before bed time or if you wake during the night.

Give pregnancy yoga a go:

Pregnancy yoga is safe for you to try during your maternity. It can help relieve muscle tension and is known to bring inner peace. Yoga is as much about maintaining a great mental balance as it is about staying fit.

Keep a dream journal

Due to hormones, stress and a lack of sleep, you may experience quite negative dreams or 'nightmares' during your pregnancy. Keeping a dream journal can help rid your mind of negative thoughts and worries. You can also assess your dreams and the symbols in it to find out what they mean.

Pregnancy relaxation does not have to be difficult, keeping your mind balanced is the key to not feeling too stressed about common pregnancy worries. If you find that your pregnancy stress is making you feel quite down, don't be afraid to discuss your issues with the midwife or obstetrician leading your pre-natal care.
