Kodaikanal, Relaxing Holiday Trip in Tamil Nadu

Kodaikanal, which is popular as the Princess of Hill Stations, is a small town located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Situated amidst Palni Hills, Kodaikanal is a famous summer retreat in India.

The name 'Kodaikanal' is believed to be evolved from two Tamil words - Kodai and Kanal, as per which Kodaikanal can be described as the 'the forest of the Summer' or 'the gift of Summer'. The works in Sangam Literature that can be dated back to 1st - 3rd centuries mentions about this place. The earlier historical records of Kodaikanal are obscure and nothing much is known except that it was the land of the Palaiyar tribe. Later, with the arrival of the British, Kodaikanal was transformed to a summer retreat and a sanatorium. Kodaikanal also became an agrarian land under the rule of British.

Kodaikanal, situated on the eastern extensions of Western Ghats on the Palni hill plateau, lies at an average elevation of 2133 meters above the sea, in between the lush valleys of Rivers Parappar and Gundar. Kodaikanal, with its green meadows grasslands and shola forests, is regarded among the biological hot spots of India. Pallangi and Vilpatti villages bound Kodaikanal on its north, lower Palni hills on its east, Cumbum valley on the south and Western Ghats on its west.

Kodaikanal is famous for its captivating scenery, orchid gardens, waterfalls and rich flora and fauna. April to June, whcih is the summer season in the plains, is the peak tourist season in Kodaikanal. Tourists visit Kodaikanal during the winter months from October to January as well.

Kodaikanal offers many tourist attractions to its visitors such as Kodaikanal Lake, Bryant Park, Coaker's Walk, Bear Shola Falls, Green Valley View,Pine forests,Shembaganur Museum of Natural History, Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, Pillar Rocks, Guna caves, Silver Cascade, Dolphin's Nose, Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple and Berijam Lake.

Kodaikanal is well connected to all major destinations in India by rail, road and air. The nearest airport to Kodaikanal are at Madurai (135 km),Trichy (200 km) and Coimbatore (170 km). The nearest railheads to Kodaikanal are Palani Railway Station (64 km), Kodai Road Station (80 km) t and Dindigul Railway Junction (100 km).

The maximum atmospheric temperature at Kodaikanal and 19.8 and the minimum is 11.3 during summer and a maximum of 17.3 and a minimum of 8.3 during wintr. Kodaikanal also offers souvenir items like the handcrafts, homemade chocolates, postcards and Eucalyptus oil for the shopaholics.
