Simple Tips for Better Bathroom Lighting
Article by Steve Kayhill
Interior lighting is something that receives so little attention among homeowners as its given only passing though in many cases. To save money, many homeowners will opt to simplify their lighting in places like the bathroom in order to invest it in other rooms like living room or kitchen. Many a general contractor has simply let a homeowner make the choice when it comes to lighting design which only leads to inadequate and underappreciated space in the home.
As the bathroom becomes ever more popular as a location within the home to relax, lighting requires a lot more thought - especially in a newly remodeled bathroom containing a steam shower or spa tub. Lighting is critical to setting the mood and when handled properly by your general contractor there is a massive payoff both in comfort and home value.
To put it bluntly: This is where you will start each day and bring it to a close before you crawl into bed. Do you really want this intimate space to put you off because of lighting or do you want to be able to enjoy the mood boost when you need it most?
Lighting for a bathroom is something that should be developed in layers. A single light over the mirror or sink doesn't provide benefit in all the ways we use the bathroom. There should be ample light to enhance various activities like shaving, applying makeup, showering with other lighting installed specifically to enhance mood.
Task Lighting
Task lighting should get top consideration because it's what we use most often in the bathroom environment. Vanity lighting comes in first because this light works the hardest to illuminate the facial features and areas which we apply the most attention during our daily rituals. For the best lighting, go with fixtures parallel to the vanity or mirror as these shine evenly across the face. Avoid recessed lighting above is it casts downward shadows.
Most homeowners don't consider that task lighting can and should be added within the shower area as well. If you have a small bathroom this can likely be passed on, especially if you have a glass door. A simple recessed light or heat light in the shower can make for a more comfortable experience. This same type of lighting can be added over the tub and toilet as well.
Ambient Lighting
As mentioned, the mood lighting in the bathroom is extremely important if you use this space to relax - such as in a garden tub or a shower without all the lights on. When you want to design some kind of ambient lighting in your bathroom, you should break out the creative thought process and look at your existing design or planned changes. Recessed rope light behind moulding, soft lights that shine from within planters can help create a soft glow that accents both architecture and the perimeter of the room.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is often used in designs by a general contractor and homeowner to highlight specific pieces of architecture (fireplace, moulding) or other features (artwork and design pieces). Recessed spotlights are easy to include in the bathroom and can help highlight a restful area (like a nook for reading neat the tub) or combined with shower lighting in a way to accent the decorative tile-work.
The Finishing Touches
The general contractor is there to get the design and angles right for you, but it's up to you as the homeowner to create the right glow with your lighting. That means deciding whether or not you want to use dimmers and what kind of bulbs you'll be using. The general contractor can help with the dimmer but the bulbs are in your court. Crisp white will render your skin most accurately and a good halogen bulb sets the gold standard for lighting your bathroom space. Choose wisely and you'll create the perfect mood lighting and task lighting for your newly remodeled bathroom.
